The Emerald Tablet

(thought to be 2nd or 3rd Century B.C.)

It is true, without lying, sure and very true.

What is below is as it is above, and what is above is as it is below, to perform the wonders of the one thing. And as all things were from the one by reflection on the one, so all things were born by adaptation from the one thing.

The father of it is the Sun; its mother is the Moon.
The wind has borne it in its belly; the earth is its nurse. It is the progenitor of all marvelous works throughout the whole world. Its power is entire if it is turned to the earth.

Separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross, sweetly, with much ingenuity. It rises from earth to heaven, and descends again to earth, and it receives power from above and below. So you will have the glory of all the world. The idea of darkness will fly from you.

This is the complete firmness of courageous strength; for it masters all subtle things and penetrates all that is solid. So there will be miraculous changes and this is the manner of it.

Therefore I am called Hermes Trismegistos because I have three parts of the wisdom of the whole world.

What I have said about the work of the Sun is complete.
